Radiotherapy is one of the three therapies along with surgery and chemotherapy that treats cancer. Besides cancer, the radiotherapy is also applied for treating some benign diseases. Radiotherapy is advantageous in that it is possible to achieve a survival rate similar to the radical surgery, while preserving organ functions, such as early breast cancer, glottic cancer, and anal cancer. Recently, radiotherapy is advancing rapidly to 3D conformal radiation therapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, and image-guided radiation therapy along with the development and advancement of computers. The improvement reduces side effects while enhancing the therapeutic effect.


방사선종양학과는 전리방사선을 이용하여 종양을 치료하는 의학의 한 분야입니다.


방사선치료는 외과적 수술, 항암화학치료와 함께 암을 치료하는 3대 치료법 중의 하나로, 암 이외에 일부 양성 질환의 치료에도 적용되고 있습니다.
방사선치료는 조기유방암, 성문암, 항문암 등에서와 같이 장기의 기능을 그대로 보존하면서 근치적 수술과 비슷한 생존율을 얻을 수 있다는 장점이 있습니다.
특히, 최근의 방사선치료는 컴퓨터 기술의 발전과 더불어 3차원 입체조형 방사선치료, 세기조절방사선치료, 영상유도방사선치료 등으로 빠르게 발전하고 있으며, 이를 통해 부작용은 줄이면서 치료효과를 더욱 높이고 있습니다.
